Afternoon, an indie sewing pattern label based in Cape Town, South Africa, has just released a new sewing pattern! Fern is a lovely vintage-inspired pair of shorts featuring turn-up cuffs, oh-so handy pockets, and a soft belt in the waist. I was lucky to be one of the girls pattern testing for Afternoon and couldn’t be more happy to share with you the result! Here are my Fern shorts!
This pattern is an intermediate level with clear instructions that will take no longer than a weekend to make! I decided for a blush bouclé fabric I fell in love with, which at the end meant my Fern shorts needed to be fully lined. It was almost double the work, but absolutely worth it! I love every inch of them!
I made some few alterations to the pattern to reduce the height and accommodate for my petite frame. For my waist vs hips discrepancy in size, I used size A for the waist and size B for the hips. But a full blog post about the sewing details of this piece will be up soon with the step-by-step construction, so, for now, I just want you to see how beautiful they are, how they fit so well and how I style them!
I made my fabric choice in a blink of an eye when I first saw this gorgeous blush bouclé. But when I was at home and started cutting my fabric pieces I doubted it for a bit thinking that bouclé shorts were not such a great idea. Would they actually look good, would I wear them, would they fit in my wardrobe? All these doubts came to an end as soon as I finished them. Yes, bouclé was a brilliant idea and yes, they match my wardrobe! After all, the shorts are the kind of tailored piece I love to wear and bouclé is such a classy and feminine fabric (I also used it for my Chanel inspired skirt, see here), plus blush is my dream color, so the combination couldn’t be better!
I think they look great with flats, a blouse, and a cardigan now that the weather is a bit more chilly, but they will also look great with sandals and for a more special occasion, heeled sandals will match perfectly!
