Here’s the making of the oversized bow blouse I recently finished! A great sewing project to add to your list. It’s simple and fast but results in a gorgeous statement shirt that sure will brighten up your day. Keep reading to know how I made it and how you can make it too!

A statement white shirt is a key piece for this season. Designers have revived the classic white shirt into very fashionable pieces – think off shoulder tops, bell sleeves, knots & bows, oversized, as a dress. The options seem endless. A white shirt is very versatile – you can wear it with jeans for a more casual look or with a floral midi length skirt for a fresh and feminine spring outfit. While this trend was already around last summer, it’s definitely blooming this season, a wardrobe staple that I have been longing to have in my closet.

I found a great pattern on Burda Style for a blouse with an oversized bow. Although the pattern is from their 10/2010 edition, this was exactly what I had in mind for a statement white shirt for this spring. We’ve seen loads of oversized bows in the runaways lately, and you know that I have this love affair with bows, so I was sold. I’m talking about the pattern 118B of that issue – available here. It’s rated at difficulty level 2, so a simple and quick project with some details. I bought the fabric at the store A.Boeken in Amsterdam, a white cotton with paper touch, ideal for adding some structure to the bow.

The pattern only starts at a size 36. I graded the pattern down to a size 34 (see my step-by-step tutorial). I then shortened the bodice according to my size and cut my fabric pieces. The construction went as follows:

Uma camisa branca sempre foi um essencial num guarda-roupa. As última tendências têm-nos trazido várias interpretações deste clássico, em modelos frescos e irreverentes. Há muito que eu queria adicionar uma peça assim ao meu guarda-roupa. Eu gosto imenso de modelos com um toque mais feminino, e este molde da Burda Style com um laço volumoso na frente cativou-me de imediato – estou a falar do molde 118B da edição 5/2010 (disponível em pdf aqui). Para que o laço ficasse mais volumoso, comprei um tecido 100% algodão com acabamento ‘paper touch’.

O molde só começa num tamanho 36. Comecei por reduzir o molde para um tamanho 34 (vejam como fazer neste tutorial passo-a-passo). Reduzi também as partes do molde de acordo com a minha altura de costas (era a única alteração necessária) e passei depois o molde já alterado para o papel de seda. Depois de cortar as partes do molde no tecido, faz-se a contrução da peça da seguinte forma:

1. The pattern instructions start with the opening in the front of the blouse. This is done by using interfacing and sewing in place an extra pattern piece that ensures a neat finish to the opening.

Seguindo as instruções do molde, começa-se a construção da blusa com a abertura da frente. Para este passo é necessário um pedacinho de entretela e cose-se uma guarnição na abertura que depois se vira para o avesso, para um acabamento mais elegante.

2. Still focusing on the neckline, I then needed to create the gathers as indicated in the pattern. I used 2 rows of stitches to create the gathers. With the gathers in place, I attached the front and back pieces, by sewing the shoulder and side seams, and finished the bottom hem.

As beiras da frente do decote são franzidas como indicado no molde. Eu usei duas linhas de pesponto para auxiliar o franzido. Unem-se depois as partes da frente e de trás, cosendo as costuras laterais e dos ombros. Faz-se a bainha, virando os valores de costura para o avesso.

3. To attach the sleeves I first closed them by sewing the side seams. To make them fit nicely and for an extra detail, I added some gathers on the top of the sleeves. With the help of many pins, I attached the sleeves to the bodice ensuring the gathers would be evenly spaced. I finished the sleeves with a simple hem.

Cozem-se as costuras laterais das mangas antes da sua aplicação. Eu fiz também um pequeno franzido na manga a assentar no ombro. Este franzido não só ajuda na aplicação da manga, mas acaba por ser um detalhe interessante que eu achei que ficava bem nesta blusa. Aplicam-se as mangas com a ajuda de alfinetes e cose-se a bainha.

4. Another pattern piece is used to neatly finish the collar. This requires to sew over the gathers so I needed to be patient and go slow. The front opening is then finished with a button on the inside. I just attached the button and created a button loop with thread to fasten it. I then created and attached the collar piece that will result in the oversized bow. The collar piece is sewed to the back part of the neckline only.

Faz-se o acabamento do decote com ajuda de uma tira enviesada, que depois de cosida e assente com o ferro se vira para o avesso, fazendo-se depois um pesponto em toda a volta do decote. Neste processo, é necessário coser sobre o franzido, o que deve ser feito devagar e com cuidado. Prega-se ainda um botão pequeno na parte interior da abertura e faz-se um aselha de linha do tamanho do botão. O decote é então guarnecido com a gola laço, que se cose somente à parte de trás do decote.

5. Just tie a beautiful bow in the front and there you have it, a gorgeous oversized bow blouse!

Faz-se um laço bem volumoso na frente e fica assim completa esta bonita blusa com gola laço!

This was a fast and very satisfying project. I could learn a lot from it, especially on the construction of the neat neckline with the opening and the gathers, but it went fast and the end result is delightful.
